Tourists heading to Italy warned to bring extra documents or face ‘rejection’ | Coventry Live

The Foreign Office has issued a warning to tourists with booked trips to Italy, advising them to prepare for four additional border checks. Italian border control may ask tourists to provide proof of their holiday plans to ensure they do not intend to overstay the visa-free limit.

In addition to a valid passport, arrivals may be required to present proof of their accommodation, such as a hotel booking confirmation email, as well as a return or departure ticket. Travelers may also be required to provide proof of insurance for their trip or demonstrate that they have sufficient funds for the duration of their stay.

According to Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, tourists may be asked to prove “the availability of financial means” to finance their stay – this could be in the form of cash, bank guarantees, insurance policies or bills of exchange. The Italian ministry’s website indicates that the daily charge per person for travelers entering Italy is €36.67 – the equivalent of £31.22 per day.

This figure fluctuates depending on the length of stay and is lower for people traveling in groups. For example, tourists traveling in a group of two or more for a week’s holiday will only need to prove they have €26.33 per day if asked.

The Foreign Office website made it clear: “If foreign nationals cannot prove the availability of the necessary resources, they will receive a refusal order from Border Police authorities,” reports Birmingham Live.

Furthermore, the UK Foreign Office also noted: “At Italian border control, you may be required to show proof of accommodation, for example a hotel booking confirmation or proof of address, if you are visiting your own property ( for example a second home), show proof of insurance for your trip, show a return or departure ticket (or) prove that you have enough money for your stay. The minimum amount required depends on the accommodation.
