Super Size Me star who ate McDonald’s every day for a month dies aged 53

The man behind the award-winning documentary Super Size Me has died aged 53. American filmmaker Morgan Spurlock claimed he only ate McDonald’s for a month for the hit series.

His documentary set out to show the damage eating fast food can do to the body, with the film revealing a massive change in his appearance following the experiment. His family announced his death saying the world had lost a “creative genius”.

His brother Morgan told the New York Post: “It was a sad day saying goodbye to my brother Morgan. Morgan gave so much through his art, ideas and generosity.

“Today the world lost a true creative genius and a special man. I am so proud to have worked with him.” His family said his death came after a battle with cancer.

The 2004 documentary Super Size Me was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. The show saw him eat McDonald’s for each of his three meals every day for a month – and he never turns down the ‘super size’ option.

He claimed to have gained 24.5 lbs and gained 13% in body fat as well as an increase in his cholesterol levels during the experiment. He said his mental health also suffered with problems with mood swings and sexual problems, as well as problems with liver function.

Its sequel Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken, which was released in 2017, took issue with the fast food industry’s claims that it was now healthier. However, the documentary didn’t make its mark after it was first released on YouTube, but then dropped.
