It makes very interesting reading when you look back to see what Chelsea’s Romeo Lavia had to say about Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca a few years ago..

The Guardian has just claimed there is a “strong chance” Maresca could leave Leicester to become Chelsea’s next head coach. However, the Blues still have Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna and Brentford’s Thomas Frank on their managerial shortlist.

What Romeo Lavia once said about Enzo Maresca

If Maresca arrives at Stamford Bridge this summer, he will immediately have some familiar faces in the squad that he recognises. The Italian boss previously coached Chelsea’s Romeo Lavia and Cole Palmer when they were playing in Manchester City’s academy.

Maresca, who worked as Man City’s under-23 boss, coached Lavia and Palmer. He later worked as Pep Guardiola’s assistant and in the first team.

Lavia once shared some interesting tactical tips he received from Maresca when he was working under him for the Man City U23 team.

Lavia said via GOAL in 2021: “I really enjoy getting the ball back and going through the lines. Enzo helped me a lot with this, always being half a turn so I could see the game ahead, so it’s not a problem now.

“I know I have my qualities, but if I do something wrong, they help me.”

How Chelsea could mirror Leicester’s midfield

For anyone who missed out on Leicester’s promotion from the Championship this campaign, the full version of the midfield played a key role in the success.

Maresca’s preferred midfield trio was a combination of Harry Winks, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Wilfred Ndidi. He was the perfect blend of control in possession while being physical and aggressive off the ball.

The Chelsea Chronicle one could certainly imagine Lavia as a pass master next season, replicating Winks’ job at Leicester. Having already worked under the Foxes boss in Manchester and understanding his way of thinking would give him a helping hand to get started.

Meanwhile, Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo and Conor Gallagher are the Blues’ other central midfielders who could really suit a possession-based style under Maresca.

If Chelsea take the plunge and name the inexperienced Maresca, it might not all be doom and gloom for those who already doubt him.
