Harry Newman slammed for ‘unacceptable’ act in Leeds Rhinos clash at St Helens

It was another night to forget for Leeds Rhinos at St Helens as they fell to another heavy defeat at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

Despite taking an early lead through Ash Handley and only trailing 12-6 at the break, the Rhinos suffered another second-half collapse.

Rohan Smith’s side conceded five tries in the second half, eventually losing 40-10. It was another forgettable night for Leeds, who have now lost six games this season.

At full-time, there was again plenty to choose from in the Rhinos display, with a number of players once again falling short of expectations due to the fury of Leeds fans at the ground and online.

In their post-match analysis, Sky Sports weren’t shy about pointing out where Leeds went wrong. Although mistakes and poor defense were the focus, both Jon Wilkin and Danika Priim were quick to point to a single moment that defined the Rhinos’ night and their season as a whole.

The Leeds Rhinos star has been slammed by the Sky Sports pundits

Pundits Sky Wilkin and Priim hit out at center Harry Newman for his lack of effort in chasing down one of Saints’ second-half tries.

After a break from Waqa Blake saw Newman make a desperate throw upfield to stop him, the Rhinos number three could be seen lying on the floor watching the game.

His lack of effort to run back and get into the defensive line saw the Saints score on the next play, with Curtis Sironen collapsing on the sport Newman would have been in the defensive line. Instead, Newman could be seen walking off the field of play.

Speaking about it after the game, Wilkin said: “That clip for me epitomizes it (lack of spirit). Harry Newman makes a mistake. It’s a defensive error. But watch him stay on the ground (and not try to run back).

“Look, he’s still on the ground. Look again, he’s still on the ground. Fast forward this game now, we see St Helens react and a lot of Leeds players react and Curtis Sironen runs a nice line and ends up scoring the try.

“But now look at the bottom left of the screen. Harry Newman isn’t even in the game again. That’s really the difference between these two teams.”

Priim added: “It looks like he walked off the pitch by himself, didn’t he? And that for me I talked about earlier – the effort and energy that St Helens has is exemplary (in comparison).

“This is the type of body language from Leeds Rhinos that is simply not acceptable. You made a mistake, you sat down and had no ownership of it.”
