Leeds United are trying to sign Borussia Dortmund right-back Marius Wolf on a free transfer this summer to strengthen their back four, but only if they progress to the play-off final.

Tomorrow is make or break for much of what Leeds have planned for the summer window as they find out whether it is another season in the EFL or a return to the Premier League that is in store.

The 49ers will have contingencies just in case, but we’re already seeing some glimpses of what could happen if Leeds win on Sunday.

Leeds are interested in a free transfer for Marius Wolf from Borussia Dortmund

Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg said this week that Leeds are keen on Borussia Dortmund right-back Marius Wolf, 28.

The German defender is out of contract this summer as his side prepare for the Champions League final at the start of June and Leeds are keeping an eye on his situation.

A number of other parties are also mentioned in Plettenberg’s update, including La Liga and Serie A outfits, as well as interest from Saudi Arabia.

An alert has since surfaced from Ruhr Nachrichten, who share that the defender’s current preference is the wealth of top-flight Saudi Arabia, the payoffs for players leaving Europe are huge as we’ve seen various lucrative deals secured.

Playoff Final: Leeds United v Southampton predictions

Wolf makes perfect sense for Leeds as a free transfer if promoted

Of course, we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves with the dream of a predicted line-up for next season, with Wolf part of it in the Premier League – we have to beat Southampton first.

However, if Leeds are looking at Wolf, they are already showing signs of building their squad for promotion in the absolute right way.

Closing the gap with the rest of the top is difficult and therefore you have to find value for money in every signing you make.

A free transfer currently earning £54,000 a week with vast top-flight experience at a good age is exactly what this side need.

We are desperately short of a right-back, regardless of the division we are in, and signing someone who is a regular in a Champions League finalist team on a free is ideal because he lifts the pitch for our team.

It might not be a world beater – and the general reactions of those on social media who have seen it say so – but it’s better than what we’ve got for sure.

An energetic, athletic, 6ft2in, versatile right-back could be just the shrewd business we need in a number of areas to help our rather weak squad compared to the rest of the top flight.

Quiz: Remember Leeds United’s last 15 results against Southampton before the play-off final?
