Police are issuing a cow warning after a man was seriously injured

Police have issued a warning to stay away from cows after a man was seriously injured. Police say a 50-year-old man was seriously injured after being trampled by cows.

Derbyshire Police were alerted to a man being trampled by cows in Shirland, a small village 30 miles north-west of Nottingham, at around 7.40am on Friday. The man was taken to hospital with “significant, serious injuries”, although they are not believed to be life-threatening at this stage.

Police urged people to remain vigilant around animals, especially where animals are with their young. A Derbyshire Police spokesman said: “The Countryside Code recommends that wild animals, livestock and horses are given plenty of space. Animal behavior can be unpredictable, especially when they are with their young.

“And the Ramblers Association advises that if you are walking through a field with cattle or other farm animals, you should walk quickly and quietly. It is possible that the animals will approach you, but if you panic or run away from they can start running too.”

Walkers are advised not to approach, feed or touch the animals and are asked to leave any gates as they find them. Dog walkers are urged to keep their pets close and on a lead around other animals.

“If cattle run towards you or you feel in any danger, let your dog off the lead,” added the police spokesman. “This will make it easier for both of you to get to safety.”

Last year, cows were named the deadliest animal in Britain. It has been revealed that 30 people have been killed by cows in the four years to 2023. Experts have called for new laws to protect the public from cows, claiming an increase in aggressive behavior by cattle.
