M1 traffic updates as ‘police incident’ leads to long queues – recap

A warning was issued to motorists on the M1 in Leicestershire on Saturday morning (May 25) following a reported ‘incident’. The exact nature of what happened was initially unclear.


The incident happened between junction 20 for Lutterworth and junction 21 of the M1 for Leicester Forest East. Traffic was blocked in both directions on the highway due to the incident.



Highways England said all traffic had to be stopped while officers from Leicestershire Police attended what it called “a police-led incident”. Long delays followed before all traffic was cleared.

Traffic returns to normal

The latest information suggests that everything is back to normal on the M1 this morning following the previous incident. We have no information on what caused the delay, but it did lead to a number of long queues.

Traffic relaxation

According to traffic data provider Inrix, traffic is now beginning to ease along the M1 in Leicestershire following the previously reported “incident”. We still don’t have any information on what happened on the M1, but it did force police to temporarily hold up all traffic.

Long delays still remain. Highways England says there is around 3 miles of congestion on the M1 Southbound between junctions 20 and 21 and around 2 miles of congestion on the northbound stretch.

Traffic cleared – long queues remain

Highways England has confirmed that all traffic being held up on the M1 has now been cleared. However, it’s far from over for those stuck in the queues.

Authorities warned of long delays and congestion in the area. About three miles of queued traffic is currently found in both directions.

This was the scene on the M1 Southbound at Junction 21 of the M1 in the last few minutes. It shows long queues forming as a result of traffic that occurred following a reported “police-led incident”.

We still don’t have details about what the incident is. Queues of approximately three miles were created following the incident.
