Huddersfield Town shirts reimagined by fashion students at the University of Huddersfield

It’s Huddersfield Town shirts like you’ve never seen before.

Fashionable students from the University of Huddersfield have teamed up with Town to give some of the club’s shirts a bold makeover.

The custom kits were weird and wonderful, one with the Castle Hill symbol in silhouette and another with bridal-style lace, perfect for fans of the city planning to tie the knot this summer. A third had corset-style lace up the back!

Town contacted fashion professors Kathryn Brennand and Debbie Allsop and donated dozens of Umbro shirts and training kits, kept as a first-team reserve, some dating back to their Premier League days.

The 1st and 2nd year fashion students got down to business and produced some amazing creations.

Other designs see the famous blue and white striped home shirt teamed with a yellow away top and a poem about the club on the back. The project also has students working with different fabrics as they consider a sustainable approach in an industry that is reducing its carbon footprint.

Kathryn Brennand, course leader in Fashion Design, said the students took on the design work as if they were commissioned using a material they might not normally choose.

She added: “Pupils learned that football shirt designs are many and varied and that the background of the shirt as a representation of the club is also important.

“And it’s vital that students think with sustainability in mind. Football shirts can be seen as a one-time item given how often clubs come up with new designs, but this project proves they can have an extended life.

“Students are also learning about the club and it’s important that their work has some context.”

The club will also sponsor the university’s student fashion show in July and Huddersfield Town global brand director Domenic Notarfrancesco said: “Seeing the club and university working together at Huddersfield is hugely rewarding and we couldn’t have be more than happy to sponsor this. event.

“A fantastic place to learn, it is important for us to work with like-minded local institutions to show what is available and possible right on our doorstep.

“One of the most recognizable parts of the Huddersfield Town brand is our kit, home or away, with so many iconic iterations over time.

“Seeing how the fashion students reimagined this, showed their creativity and created new and fresh pieces was a real joy.

“Broadening the horizons of what Huddersfield Town is, who we are and what it means to be a Terrier is of the utmost importance to us.

“I’m looking forward to taking us to places you wouldn’t normally associate with football and teaching more people about the club – and it’s a hope that the University of Huddersfield continues to play a part in that.”
