Wayne Rooney in a candid Manchester United admission to the former Leicester City defender

Wayne Rooney says former Leicester City defender Jonny Evans should not play for Manchester United. Rooney was a team-mate with Evans for nine years during his time at Old Trafford, where Evans returned after leaving the Foxes last year.

The 36-year-old was named on United’s bench this afternoon as they faced Manchester City in what is expected to be Erik Ten Hag’s final game. As United struggle to regain their former glory, Rooney said Evans should no longer be involved.

“I only know two or three of them (personally),” he said. “Obviously Jonny Evans is back. Jonny is a leader but realistically Jonny should not be playing for Manchester United now at this stage of his career.

“For me, I struggle to see a leader. When you see some players struggling the way they did, (leaders) will protect those players. A lot of Manchester United players at the moment are exposed.”

After leaving Leicester City for United last year in a surprise move, Evans said: “I wasn’t consciously thinking I would sign (for Man Utd) after I got the first call. When you get to a certain age, you’re starting to screw up your career.

“I got the call and I had no other option, so I took it and tried to do my best in training and take my chance. Then you just hope your body will help you. It was never a thought that I would come in and start, I was told my role would be to provide competition and that’s how I approached it with a couple of injuries, then I got the chance to start.
