Golcar United Ladies are heading to their first cup final and everyone is rejoicing

Golcar United Ladies head into their first cup final this weekend and manager Nathan Martin said: “We’re underdogs but we can really beat anyone these days.”

It was a successful season after promotion, with a middle-of-the-road finish and the chance of silverware.

Golcar take on favorites Bradford Park Avenue Ladies in the League Shield final at the West Riding FA’s headquarters in Oulton on Sunday, May 26 (11am).

Nathan said: “Everyone is really excited about the game and it’s reward for a great season. I went into this season wanting to avoid relegation and do a bit of cup work and we overcame that and got to the final.

“We know it will be a tough game against a team in the league above us, but we really believe we can beat anyone on our day.

“Although we never expected to be in the final, we’re not just going there to participate, we’re going for it.

“If the worst happens I’ll be proud of what we’ve achieved, but if we win it’ll be a good weekend of celebration!”

Golcar won at Boroughbridge in the semi-final with a brace from 20-goal scorer Ainsley Strickland and goals from Maddie Walsh and Charlotte Parker. Both Ainsley and Maddie are bridesmaids at a wedding and yet they can’t make it to the finals.

After a slow start to the season, the team then went seven games unbeaten and won four games to reach the cup final.

“We’ve brought in a few new players and since January everything in training has started to happen,” said Nathan. “Everyone gets along and we have a great environment. Everyone is enjoying it and we have a winning mentality.”

The team was supported by 60 fans who traveled to Boroughbridge and there is a coach going from Skye Direct Stadium on Sunday.

“It’s great that we have so much support,” Nathan said. “And we’re going there to win.”
