Police are investigating the death of a man in Brixton Hill, Lambeth (Jason Bell)

Detectives investigating the mysterious death of a Brixton Hill man have opened a murder inquiry.

The man’s body was discovered with multiple injuries in the early hours of Monday on New Park Road in Lambeth, south London.

Police were called by the London Ambulance Service shortly before 7am and found the 44-year-old man already dead.

His death was initially treated as suspicious, before the investigation was upgraded to murder.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: “A 48-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday 14 July on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody at a south London police station.”

The victim’s next of kin have been notified of his death and are being supported by specialist officers.

Official identification is yet to take place.

A special post-mortem examination carried out at Greenwich Mortuary gave the provisional cause of death as multiple injuries.

Detectives from the Specialist Crime Command are leading the investigation.
