Human remains found in Mitcham River

Human remains were found in the River Wandle in Mitcham.

The remains were discovered in the water by members of the public yesterday (May 21).

Police were called to the scene on Rawnsley Avenue, which is next to the River Wandle in Ravensbury Park, at around 2.18pm.

The area and road were temporarily closed as police set up the crime scene.

No arrests have been made and the identity of the remains is unknown at this time.

Police are awaiting official identification of the remains.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “On Tuesday 21 May at 2.18pm, police were called to Rawnsley Avenue, Mitcham, after human remains were found in a river by members of the public.

“Officers have attended and cleared the crime scene, the road will remain closed until the scene is closed.

“Inquiries into the circumstances are ongoing and we await the official identification of the remains.

“At this early stage, we have not made any arrests.”
