Inside the illegal ‘village’ built on an allotment in north London: Fury as… trends now

An illegal mini ‘village’ of log cabins has sparked outrage on a north London allotment after they were built with sofas, kitchens and even double glazing on plots meant for growing vegetables.

Dozens of large wooden structures – some with working chimneys – have sprung up in Enfield, decked out with a range of home comforts and even children’s play areas.

A tenant at Barrowfield Allotments claims the shabby cottages were built to socialize with people holding barbecues and parties for their friends.

But green-fingered landowners are absolutely furious and claim they were built illegally without planning permission.

According to Enfield Council, which owns the site, tenants are only allowed a small tool shed, measuring up to 2.75cm long and 2.10 meters wide.

But pictures taken by MailOnline show a number of structures which could be in breach of the lease.

A frustrated landowner said: “There are a lot of structures built illegally there, they have been for years.

“I looked at the lease for an allotment, the Council really let the inspection of allotments go to waste.”

The council recently launched an investigation into a ‘tiny house’ built on one of the allotment plots.

It has a front door, patio and double glazed windows, as well as its own brick chimney, water tank and trampoline. Inside the house there is a kitchen and a large dining table.

One man, who owns land nearby, told MailOnline he belonged to “two families who have land next to each other” and was visiting them on a weekend.

He added: “It’s like a village here.” They (the families) are here from seven o’clock to eight o’clock. They have a barbecue, a picnic and then go home.

According to the council’s website, tenants are allowed to have a small shed for garden tools, a polytunnel or greenhouse, compost bins and fruit cages.
