Have your say on the shocking news about the regeneration of Leicester Square

Have your say on the news that plans to regenerate Leicester Square have been scrapped by the city’s mayor, Sir Peter Soulsby, in our latest poll. Revealed at a press conference on Wednesday this week (May 23), Sir Peter said the regeneration had been put on hold as the demolition of the market roof revealed the “huge potential” of the space previously occupied by stalls and opened up heritage views. buildings bordering the square.

Traders said they felt betrayed by the news and accused Sir Peter of backstabbing them. The city’s mayor said the revelation raised questions about whether installing a new covered market in the square “would be the right thing to do.”

Instead, the square could be left empty to be used as an open space that could host specialist festivals and markets, celebrations such as the recent Leicester City Football Club parade, and generally serve as “an important meeting place in the heart of the city center. .”

Traders moved into the Green Dragon Market in December, with promises to return to their historic home by the end of this year. They told LeicestershireLive at the time that they were not entirely convinced the plan for the new-look square would go ahead.

A number of ideas for alternative housing for the market have been put forward by the council, including in the Cank Street space following the demolition of 12 to 20 Market. Traders remaining in Green Dragon Square is also a possibility, said Sir Peter.

Have your say on what you think should be done in our poll below. Should the market move back to its historic home? Is the Cank Street proposal a good idea? How about keeping merchants in the Green Dragon Market?
