The recently relegated Premier League side ready to make ‘opening bid’ for Coventry City star

Newly relegated Luton Town will test Coventry City’s resolve with an “opening bid” for star midfielder Ben Sheaf, it has been claimed.

The Sun’s transfer pundit Alan Nixon reports today that the Hatters, who have previously been linked with an interest in the 26-year-old Sky Blues star, are eyeing reinforcements to replace Ross Barkley, with the 30-year-old ex-Everton years and the Chelsea midfielder was expected to leave Kenilworth Road this summer after a superb personal season under Rob Edwards.

Manager Edwards is looking to strengthen his squad to launch an immediate promotion bid for a swift return to the Premier League. Meanwhile, Fulham and newly-promoted Ipswich Town have also been interested in Sheaf, who, if he stays at Coventry this summer, is expected to be named Mark Robins’ captain for 2024/25.

But Luton know they will have to bid in excess of £10million and offer “top wages” to lure Sheaf away from the CBS Arena, speculation says today.

Today’s report claims: “Luton are ready to make an opening bid for Coventry midfielder Ben Sheaf as they deal with the loss of Ross Barkley.

“The Hatters want to spend some of their parachute payments from relegation on the former Arsenal prospect. Luton know they will have to top £10m to have a chance and also come up with top wages for Sheaf to switch Championship outfits.”
