Birmingham-Southern baseball gets shoutouts during NCAA selection showcase

The Birmingham-Southern College baseball team got some love during Monday’s NCAA baseball tournament selection broadcast on ESPN2.

The Panthers qualified for the Division III College World Series — which begins Friday, May 31, in Granville, Ohio, despite the college closing the same day due to financial struggles. Birmingham-Southern will still enter the field without institutional support after defeating No. 3 seed Denison in the super regional round last week.

The Panthers were informed of the college’s closure on March 26 when coach Jan Weisberg called a team meeting. Birmingham-Southern was just 13-10 at the time. However, the program has gone 19-4 since receiving the news. At 32-14, the program had won five in a row before the World Series.

Despite the school closing, the program doesn’t have to worry about expenses for the World Series, as the NCAA pays for travel, food and lodging for each team that will participate in the event.

Path to Division III World Series for Birmingham-Southern

Located in Birmingham, Alabama, the college was founded in 1918 when Southern University and Birmingham College merged. In the 2010 decade, the Panthers were the fourth winningest program in Division III. They finished last in the 2019 Division III World Series, losing in the championship game.

The Panthers tied for second in the Southern Athletic Association and earned the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament. However, after losing both games to Rhoades Colleges in the first round of the SAA Conference Tournament, Georgia-Southern had to worry about making the tournament.

In the regional round, which was held at Spalding University in Lexington, Kentucky, the Panthers opened with a 21-7 win over Transylvania, followed with a 4-2 win over Spalding, and then a 5- 2 in front of Transylvania. . The Panthers defeated Denison 10-1 and 7-6 last weekend in the super regional to advance to the World Series.
