Leeds United will be unable to re-sign Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips after missing out on the Championship play-off final which saw him at Wembley.

Leeds’ biggest game of the season came and went on Sunday as they took on Southampton in the Championship play-off final.

Russell Martin, for the third time, got the better of Daniel Farke on 90 minutes as Adam Armstrong sent the Whites to another year in the EFL.

Kalvin Phillips was spotted at Wembley to watch the Leeds play-off final

After the end of his loan to West Ham, it will be another interesting transfer window for Kalvin Phillips.

Meanwhile, he was in attendance to watch his boyhood club in the playoff final, bowing out after a second consecutive difficult season:

As it was for Phillips when he took part in the play-offs for Leeds, it all ended in pain with one more season in the Championship.

Kalvin Phillips at Leeds after playoff loss

Frequent reports of Leeds attempting a sensational reunion with Phillips appeared loaded should Leeds be promoted this season.

However, with it now off the table, the Mirror share that Leeds will make no move to bring Yorkshire Pirlo back to Elland Road:

“Leeds will see their income drop next season and the parachute payment will drop to 45% of a Premier League club’s broadcast income from 55%.

“They were already in the red and making losses of £33.7m in 2022-23 despite selling Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha two years ago for a total of £88m.

“Also, Leeds’ failure to win promotion back to the Premier League ends their hopes of re-signing Phillips from Manchester City.”

Phillips would not have been a viable signing anyway

As much as there is a huge degree of romance surrounding the idea of Phillips being in a Leeds shirt again next season, it basically made no sense.

The only manager who consistently got the best out of Phillips was Marcelo Bielsa and he’s gone, so that makes a revival incredibly difficult.

It would be great to have him around, but the money involved in such a signing and the fact that he is two years out of shape make it a puzzling move to consider.
