Sky Sports pundits weigh in on Sam Burgess and Warrington Wolves’ approach

Warrington Wolves continued their wonderful season on Saturday night with another impressive win. This time, Sam Burgess masterminded a win for the Wire over Catalans Dragons in the south of France.

It was the first time the Dragons had been beaten in Perpignan this season and it was another green tick on Burgess’s CV that made Warrington contenders this season against all odds.

One thing missing from Burgess’ superb record since taking charge at the Halliwell Jones Stadium is a win over Wigan Warriors. Super League champions Wigan remain favorites for all three trophies this season.

One of these is the Challenge Cup, where Wigan and Warrington will meet at Wembley in less than two weeks. Before that, however, there is another clash between the Super League sides at the Halliwell Jones Stadium next Saturday afternoon.

The dilemma now facing both Burgess and Wigan head coach Matt Peet is whether to rest players for the first Super League meeting between the sides next week.

It is not unusual in the past for teams to rest their players in the league the week before the Challenge Cup final, however this is a slightly different scenario as the two teams who will meet at Wembley are playing the week before.

There is also the added ingredient of both teams potentially reaching that level of play on points and joint top of the table, meaning the two competition points on offer could be crucial at the end of the season.

It’s a debate that certainly caused some debate in the Sky Sports studio after Warrington’s win over the Catalans, with pundits Jamie Jones-Buchanan and Kyle Amor disagreeing on the approach either side should take.

“I think they’ve got all the momentum behind them, they’ve got some exciting games coming up, none more so than the dress rehearsal before the Challenge Cup final,” Amor said.

He continued: “I think he (Burgess) needs to rest a few players, the big win against Hull KR and then this win here in the heat. If there’s an opportunity to refresh and recharge, it’s next week.”

However, Jones-Buchanan believes Burgess and Warrington, who have now gone 69 years without winning a league title, should take a more left-field approach and do their best to win the league game.

“I think this is massive. I think the first game in the league now is massive. If they knock off Wigan, who would have a game in hand, then I think that really puts the cat among the pigeons,” said JJB.

He added: “I think it just pushes Warrington ahead of them in the league and that’s what they want, isn’t it?”

The first game between Warrington and Wigan in the Super League takes place on Saturday, kick-off at 3pm. The teams will then meet exactly seven days later at the same time on that occasion, although the winners will claim Challenge Cup glory at Wembley.
