Southampton reluctant to lose Liverpool, McCarthy target

Southampton’s play-off final hero Alex McCarthy could have a big decision to make this summer.

Aged 34, he was the club’s back-up goalkeeper for most of the Championship season.

However, a season-ending injury to Gavin Bazunu meant he was substituted for the final weeks of the campaign and the playoffs.

With him out of contract, Liverpool are interested in McCarthy as their number 2 for next season.

His manager Russell Martin said after Southampton’s play-off final victory: “He (McCarthy) has been massive since he’s come in so we’ll try to keep Al as well and keep our fingers crossed.

“It’s my job now to try to squeeze more money out of Phil (Parsons, CEO) and the board and everybody and see where it takes us.”
