“Overcome the Racists”: Local Support Group Empowering Black Parents

The Black Parents Alliance helps build strong families and a future in Simcoe County

The Black Fathers Alliance, part of Parents Against Racism Simcoe, invites black fathers to join their confidential peer-led support group.

The group is designed to empower Black parents and provide a place to share the unique challenges they face.

“My primary goal is to empower black fathers and help them create unbreakable bonds with their children,” said Daniel Carter, co-chair. “We help fathers navigate the school system, gain knowledge about family court, child protective services and the legal system.”

This group setting will allow Black parents to connect and share their unique experiences in a safe space.

Mental health resources, strategies to combat anti-black racism, guidelines for adjusting to life in Canada, and tactics for dealing with discrimination in the workplace are topics to be covered.

“Black parents are not given a fair chance, they are not listened to and they are quickly dismissed. Sharing these experiences can help combat, overcome, and overcome racists. Black parents need to know their rights,” Carter explained.

Carter, a father of four boys, including a 10-month-old, is passionate about the group.

“Fathers need to learn to talk about racism with their children and the impact it has,” he said. “Kids need to face (racism) now, not later.”

The Black Parents Alliance aims to grow with more events and guest speakers, such as mental health professionals, in the future.

To do this, they need black fathers to participate by signing up.

Support group sessions are offered in person and virtually starting June 13 (in person) and June 20 (virtual).

The Black Parents Alliance is funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
