“We had a blast with our cupcake sales,” said Kelly Croft of GDHS. “We exceeded our goal and every cent counts.”

“We sold 310 boxes of six each,” said Hot Roast Co’s Georgina Sutherland. “Twenty-two of those were gluten-free, which is great. That’s 1,860 decorated cakes in one month. The sale raised $3,155 plus $25 in some additional donations, making a total of $3,180.”

Although regular cupcakes have been the most popular, people are enjoying the gluten-free option.

“Ruth Judd was once again our biggest supporter – she took over 60 boxes and distributed them to her friends and family,” said Sutherland. “Isla (Sutherland’s daughter) loved seeing the cat and dog muffins. She even brought a picture of a cat from the Salvation Army to hang on the wall for inspiration.”

GDHS would also like to remind everyone that without volunteers they could not do what they do.

“GDHS currently has 55 active volunteers,” Croft said. “We will be holding a volunteer appreciation barbecue this spring and have posted some of our honorees on our social media page.”

No special skills are required to volunteer at the shelter, just a love of animals and a desire to be there and help.

“We need people in the morning or afternoon every day, including holidays, all year round,” she said. “We always need help with cleaning kennels, dishes, litter, folding laundry, small repairs, social media, fundraising, bottle returns, grant applications, cat hugging, grooming and many others.”

No animal is ever removed from GDHS, regardless of species. If they can’t help directly, they’ll find someone who can. It is a no-kill facility and every little life counts.

“The Gananoque and District Humane Society is a volunteer-run, no-kill animal shelter that receives no outside funding,” Croft said. “We rely heavily on donations and fundraising. GDHS wants to highlight the importance of every volunteer and every contribution they make at a time when we need support more than ever.

“Sharing time, skills, empathy and creativity is vital to the inclusion, strength and well-being of our communities. Volunteering gives us the opportunity to experience the interconnectedness of humanity, giving deeper meaning to our lives. Engaging in volunteer activities allows us to build new friendships, cultivate trust and build meaningful relationships.

“As we bring these connections together through our joint efforts, we foster a sense of belonging as we work toward common goals. It is imperative that we celebrate the immeasurable contributions of GDHS volunteers. Their actions, empathy and genuine concern for the welfare of the animals in our community exemplify the spirit of volunteerism and inspire positive change in our world. We are eternally grateful to have them.”
