The Sheffield car crash victim has been named as father-of-two Christian Marriott

A man who died after a car plowed into a group of people in Sheffield has been named as father-of-two Christian Marriott.

The 46-year-old man was out for a walk with his wife and two young sons on Wednesday afternoon when he stopped to help a woman who was lying unconscious in the street.

The woman is believed to have been involved in an altercation between a group of people, according to South Yorkshire Police, which was linked to a wedding party.

As Mr Marriott helped the woman, a car hit him as well as others, including an off-duty midwife who had stopped to help her.

Following the incident in College Close, Burngreave, was a 23-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder and a 55-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder, police said.

One of the people injured in the accident is in a serious condition in hospital.

Tributes are being paid to Mr Marriott, who was a church member and worked for the charity Community Money Advice (CMA).

He also volunteered at a food bank in Sheffield.

The church group ChristCentral said in a statement that everyone was “deeply shocked” by his death.

“Chris died doing what many will remember him for, helping others,” the statement said. “He stopped to help an unconscious woman lying in the street and while administering first aid, a car collided with Chris, the woman and others.

“Our thoughts and prayers are obviously with his wife and their two sons.

“This is an incredibly horrific situation and we are heartbroken for the family.

“Please pray for them, Chris’ wider family and friends and City Church Sheffield as they try to process this loss.”

A neighbor told the Daily Mail that the altercation resulted from a wedding party in the area following an argument at the groom’s house.

Shazia Bi, whose brother-in-law was the groom’s father, told the paper: “It was a happy occasion but it turned into a bloodbath. It was shocking.

“An innocent man who was not a member of any family but who had tried to help and calm the situation lost his life.”

Onlooker Tarek Nayli, 49, said he saw fighting in the street, several people injured and neighbors told him others were trapped under a car.

Mr Nayli said: “I heard a lot of sound, a lot of voices, a lot of shouting.

“When I came out I found people gathered around and people fighting. One guy had a lot of blood on his face.”

Senior Investigating Officer DCI Andrew Knowles said: “This is an extremely heartbreaking case where a good Samaritan, who stepped in to help a stranger in his time of need, lost his life.

“Chris leaves behind a loving family, including his devastated wife and two young sons. We are absolutely determined to secure justice for Chris and his loved ones following this horrific tragedy.”

The woman Mr Marriott was helping remains in hospital in a life-threatening condition.
