The Liverpool player says it “doesn’t make sense” to sign a contract right now

Liverpool have a lot to sort out as they navigate Arne Slot’s first summer in charge.

Slot has yet to officially take charge of the Reds, and things are already piling up on his to-do list.

First, he should finalize exactly who will be in his coaching staff at Anfield. This has not been closed yet.

After that, the transfer market will get most of Slot’s attention. Liverpool have some work to do there.

The new head coach should also be careful not to lose sight of one of the club’s most pressing matters at the moment: resolving three very “dangerous” contract situations.

Virgil van Dijk talks about the contract situation

One of three players currently entering the final 12 months of his contract is captain Virgil van Dijk.

As Liverpool’s most likely best player in 2023/24, Slot cannot afford to lose Van Dijk. Not now and not even in 12 months.

However, Virgil himself seems relatively calm about the situation. Speaking to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, the 32-year-old says it “doesn’t make sense” to focus on his contract while Slot is still settling in.

“A new contract has not been discussed yet,” says the captain. “It’s not surprising because the club has been completely busy with the new manager, staff and everything.

“Then it makes no sense to start working with the players. You can always talk and we’ll see how it goes.”

Van Dijk also highlighted the conversation he had with Slot as he prepares to move into the AXA Training Center this weekend.

“I didn’t feel like this was a farewell conversation and I think he also sees me in Liverpool 2.0,” said the centre-back.

“I have a feeling he’s happy I’m still there and I’ll be there next season so I can help him where needed. This allows us to achieve success on the field.”
