The lead actor of the upcoming film ‘Hamare Baarah’ has spoken out after receiving death threats over his bold and controversial narrative that shows the reality of women’s suffering.

Veteran actor Annu Kapoor has since spoken out urging people not to judge until they see the film, which is set to release worldwide on June 7.

He even shared a video on social media asking for police protection due to death threats he and other crew members have received.

“The film advocates for women empowerment and talks about women’s rights. First watch the movie and then give the verdict. People have the freedom to speak their mind on social media, but they shouldn’t abuse it. Do not abuse or make death threats. We’re not going to be scared of these things,” the actor said in the video.

In ‘Hamare Baarah’, Mr. Kapoor plays the lead role of a father with 11 children.

“He is a conservative orthodox father who is very much associated with his doctrine which he follows strictly and firmly and does not allow his daughters to work,” the veteran actor tells Pukaar.

“This premise is the main script of the film, which talks about women empowerment in general and respect for women. It deals with very serious and serious population issues.

“Mother Earth carries a great burden in terms of population. People are starving. Before giving birth, if everyone could think about the future of children, their education and their well-being, this earth can be a better place for everyone,” he explained.

“The UK may not have a population problem, but we in India face this problem and the empowerment and status of women in every society, irrespective of their caste, religion and creed. Going back 1,000 years, Joan of Arc was burned alive for being labeled and accused of practicing witchcraft.

“It’s time to reassess and we need to have a different perspective on women and we need to give due and proper respect to the woman.”

Annu was recently in London to promote the film along with its director Kamal Chandra, producers Ravi Gupta, Sanjay Nagpal and others.

In the film, a woman takes her father to court to allow her mother, in the middle of a high-risk pregnancy, the right to terminate the pregnancy to save her life.

It is written by Rajan Agarwal and premiered at the prestigious 77th Cannes Film Festival, marking a major milestone for Indian cinema.

Talking about the hype surrounding the groundbreaking film, Mr. Kapoor said, “Some people will love it, some will hate it and it will create negative and positive buzz. We are prepared for this and have already started receiving hate mail and hate speech. When people make this kind of film, they should be prepared for applause as well as abuse.

“Some films are made just for entertainment, others are made to say something and convey a message about significant issues. This is both. It’s made primarily to entertain, but if one percent gets a message and goes through a catharsis or a purification of emotions, that’s all well and good for us. We will feel blessed and lucky. If one person watches and says “I have changed my views on womanhood and how to respect women, I will feel blessed and extremely lucky.”

Mr. Kapoor is highly regarded, having been in the acting industry for over 40 years. He is set to release a Pride of India award on June 5.

Asked about his acting legacy, he told Pukaar, “I don’t consider myself a performer at all. I’m here to do my best, honestly, whatever anyone gives me.

“The time has come when the world needs good human beings. We have had many geniuses in many fields, but unfortunately this world has stopped producing good human beings. We need good human beings more than geniuses in various fields.

“Be humble, be full of love because that’s the only way this world can survive and be a better place to live in.”
