Baby elephant rescued from sand pit, reunited with mother in Tamil Nadu. Clock

A team of Tamil Nadu forest officials from the Gudalur division of the Nilgiris received a standing ovation from social media users after rescuing a baby elephant that accidentally fell into a deep sandy well. IAS officer Supriya Sahu shared short clips of the rescue mission and praised the team for reuniting the baby elephant with its mother soon after.

“Only now comes a very encouraging news of the successful rescue and reunification of a baby elephant in Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu foresters from the Gudalur Forest Division in the Nilgiris successfully rescued a baby elephant from a 30-metre deep sand well in an agricultural land where the young elephant had accidentally fallen,” Supriya Sahu captioned her post.

The rescue mission, which took over eight hours, involved the team making a ramp so the elephant could get out of the well. The baby elephant’s mother, meanwhile, was waiting nearby with the herd for her baby.

“After 8 hours of hard fighting, the team managed to make a ramp for the elephant to come out of the well safely. After the rescue, the team reunited the baby elephant with her mother, who waited patiently nearby with the herd. Big credit to DFO Gudalur, Vengatesh Prabhu, who led the operation with a team of 40 from 3 am,” added Supriya Sahu.

Earlier this month, Supriya Sahu shared the video of a family of elephants – a delightful sight from the deep jungles of Tamil Nadu’s Anamalai Tiger Reserve, which was captured by wildlife photographer Dhanu Paran.

The elephant family, as seen in the video, was seen sleeping “happily” somewhere in the jungle.
