West Ham United ‘on the verge of signing Sheffield United regular’

West Ham United are reportedly closing in on signing Sheffield United goalkeeper Wes Foderingham, who is set to become a free agent at the end of June.

The 33-year-old has been a solid figure between the sticks for the Blades, making 112 competitive appearances for the club since joining from Rangers in July 2020.

Despite signing the shot-stopper Ivo Grbic from Atletico Madrid during the January transfer window, Foderingham managed to retain his first-choice status at Bramall Lane for the 2023-24 campaign.

The former Swindon Town man has appeared 30 times in the Premier League for a mix of Paul Heckingbottom and Chris Wilderalthough the goalkeeper’s efforts were not enough to keep his team in the division.

Picking up just 16 points from 38 top-flight games, Sheffield United finished bottom of the Premier League table, immediately relegated back to the Championship.

West Ham ‘closer to Foderingham’s signature’

The report claims the Hammers are on the verge of securing Foderingham’s services from Sheffield United, just days after the last campaign ended.

With the goalkeeper’s current contract at Bramall Lane set to expire at the end of June, he is expected to join the East London club on a free transfer.

Foderingham’s imminent departure means Croatian Grbic could be more likely to become first-choice in the Championship for United next term.

West Ham’s interest has apparently given Foderingham, 33, another shot at Premier League football, despite keeping just one clean sheet in 30 league games this season.

West Ham’s plans for Foderingham

Despite being a regular at Bramall Lane in difficult circumstances this campaign, Foderingham is believed to play a different role at the London Stadium.

With a 23-year-old goalkeeper Joseph Anang leaving the Hammers, the top-flight outfit want a new third-choice stopper to challenge the likes of Alphonse Areola and Lukasz Fabianski.

In addition to the playing staff, there has also been a major change in the managerial seat at West Ham, with Julen Lopetegui now leading the troops following his departure David Moyes.

The Hammers are also targeting improvements to their backline with Flamengo centre-back Fabricio Bruno close to agreeing a five-year deal at the London Stadium.
