Three players from Germany Daniel Farke should look to sign for Leeds United this summer

Leeds United should look to use Daniel Farke’s contacts in Germany in the transfer market this summer.

Leeds’ 1-0 defeat by Southampton in Sunday’s play-off final means they will be playing a second successive season of Championship football and so splashing the cash is not something they can do.

Although Paraag Marathe has promised that funds will be available, Leeds will need to be smart with their business to ensure they comply with the EFL’s strict PSR regulations.

Following Farke’s history in German football and his time as manager of Borussia Monchengladbach, Leeds made use of contacts last summer, bringing in Ilia Gruev from Werder Bremen and almost signing Nadiem Amiri from Bayer Leverkusen.

Both players were available for around £5m and that is likely to be the type of price again that Leeds will be able to spend on individual signings over the next few months.

So, with that in mind, here’s a look at three players from Germany’s top two leagues to watch.

Mitchell Weiser – Werder Bremen

Starting in defense and a position that could be extremely easy next month is at right-back, with Gruev’s former Werder Bremen team-mate Mitchell Weiser.

With Connor Roberts set to return to Burnley, Sam Byram out of contract and Archie Gray wanted by a host of Europe’s elite, the right side of the defense could require more additions.

Weiser is certainly someone who fits the bill, having amassed a total of 200 Bundesliga appearances during his career for Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen and now Bremen.

At 30, Weiser would bring a wealth of experience to a young dressing room at Elland Road that needs that type of player, with Liam Cooper and Stuart Dallas ready to go.

He has scored three goals and provided seven assists in the Bundesliga this season, so his ability to get forward could be highly suited to the Championship.

Ludovit Reis – Hamburg

German football’s second division is certainly a division where there are some bargains to be had, and Hamburg midfielder Ludovit Reis could be one of them.

Reis is a central midfielder with a keen eye for goal who has scored 18 goals and provided 10 assists in 101 appearances for Hamburg.

Having played for Barcelona as a child, Reis is extremely technically gifted, but at 23 he has already shown some leadership qualities, captaining Hamburg at times last season.

Reis is also capable of playing at right back, and with Gray possibly leaving for pastures new, he would replace that type of versatility right away.

Ao Tanaka – Fortuna Dusseldorf

Another midfielder with a keen eye for goal that Leeds could overlook, and is apparently eyeing, is Fortuna Dusseldorf’s Ao Tanaka.

Tanaka is a Leeds player for last summer but opted against buying and links have resurfaced with him in the last 24 hours.

After Dusseldorf’s failure to win promotion to the Bundesliga, Tanaka could be available again when the window reopens and Leeds should not make the same mistake of missing out again.

As mentioned, Leeds are in dire need of adding some midfield goals to their squad and with seven from 30 appearances last season, he fits the bill.

Tanaka also has eight of 26 caps at international level for Japan, further proof that he knows where the back of the net is.
