Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy is on Leicester City’s shortlist as they look to replace manager Enzo Maresca.

Maresca is set to become Chelsea’s new boss, replacing Mauricio Pochettino, who left Stamford Bridge last week “by mutual consent”.

The Blues will pay a £10m fee for the Italian who guided the Foxes back to the top flight this season via the Championship title.

There should not be a lack of interest in the Leicester job, even if there is a risk that the club will start on the downside after being charged by the Premier League for allegedly breaching profitability and sustainability rules.

A range of names have been tipped to take the reins at the King Power, including West Brom’s Carlos Coberan, former Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper and ex-Chelsea boss Graham Potter.

Another name mooted is Van Nistelrooy, who is out of a job after leaving PSV under a cloud a year ago, citing a “lack of support” from the Dutch club’s hierarchy.

And The Mirror report that the 47-year-old is indeed being considered by Leicester and it comes after the former Netherlands international spoke of his desire to make it in the Premier League.

Leicester’s next manager:

Carlos Corberan – 9/4

Steve Cooper – 3/1

Ruud Van Nistelrooy – 7/2

Graham Potter – 5/1

David Moyes – 7/1

Mark Robins – 8/1

One of the greatest strikers of his generation, Van Nistelrooy won many awards with PSV, United and Real Madrid.

He began his coaching career with PSV’s youth team before being promoted to the top job, winning the Johan Cruyff Shield and the KNVB Cup in 2022/23, his only full season in charge.

Despite having two years remaining on his contract, he resigned before the campaign was over, with a club statement reading: “Van Nistelrooij reported this morning that, in his view, there was insufficient support within the club to continue more”.

In total, he won 33 of his 51 games in charge (a 64.7% winning percentage), losing just eight times.
