Coventry youngsters take part in a cricket tournament

YOUNGSTERS with additional needs shine in second round cricket tournament.

The sounds of cheers and cricket balls being hit filled Action Outdoor Sports in Stockland Green as more than 120 children from 11 schools across the region gathered for the second annual softball cricket tournament with special needs in six.

Organized by Erdington Rotary Club, this two-day event held on 13 and 14 May provided an exciting and inclusive sporting opportunity for young people with additional needs.

Representatives from Bagington Fields and Sherburne Fields Schools in Coventry joined colleagues from Birmingham, Solihull, Warwick, Stratford, Nuneaton, Coleshill Sherburne Fields Schools and Bromsgrove, all keen to show off their cricketing skills.

Friendly matches were contested by teams of six players, with medals and diplomas awarded to all participants, celebrating their enthusiasm and sportsmanship.

Past President and District Governor of Erdington Rotary Club, Tim Bushell, said: “Feedback from schools was really positive last year and so the District was delighted to be able to announce the launch of its second cricket tournament of special needs softball for six.

“This is an exciting opportunity for young people to participate in a sport that they wouldn’t normally have the chance to participate in.”

The tournament builds on the success of the Rotary special needs soccer tournaments, which have been running for 26 years.
