Chris Powell makes a remarkable statement at Sheffield Wednesday after an earlier ‘health scare’

A respected Sheffield Wednesday figure has spoken of how the club “saved” his life.

Sheffield Wednesday have achieved the unthinkable by avoiding relegation in the 2023/24 season thanks to manager Danny Rohl.

The 35-year-old German, who arrived as a relative unknown on British shores, has guided the Owls to 20th place after signing a new three-year deal at the club.

But Rohl couldn’t have done it without the help of his pitching staff and backroom staff.

The players all bought into Rohl’s ideas and played an equally important role in Sheffield Wednesday’s eventual 20th place finish in the Championship.

And in the back team, Rohl has added the likes of Henrik Pedersen and Sascha Lense, among others, alongside former England and Spurs manager Chris Powell.

He brings a wealth of experience to the team and has now spoken about how Sheffield Wednesday helped save his life.

Chris Powell: Sheffield Wednesday ‘saved my life’

Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast with Sam Allardyce, Powell discussed Rohl and his own arrival at Sheffield Wednesday.

Powell said: “I think Sheffield Wednesday changed my life and saved my life in many ways.

“I had a bit of a health scare that I won’t go into, but then I joined Sheffield Wednesday in October three points after 11 games.

“The previous manager moved on and I got a call from Danny and someone who also knew Danny before I spoke… The more I spoke to Danny I thought this would be a good fit for me.

“But I remember saying to him, ‘It would be a minor miracle if we do this because no one has ever done it.’

Chris Powell’s future at Sheffield Wednesday

Powell is certainly a highly regarded name among the fans and the impact someone with his experience and knowledge would have had in the matchup cannot be argued.

He is a former player with a lot of experience and now a coach. But when there was uncertainty surrounding Rohl’s future, there was also uncertainty surrounding Powell.

It has been argued that any club could have poached Rohl and his backroom team, including Powell, for £10m compensation.

But Rohl has since signed a new three-year deal, and shortly before that it was revealed that Powell would also get a new deal if Rohl did it.

So it looks like Powell is here to stay and that will delight Rohl, the players and the fans, with Sheffield Wednesday now having a huge chance to build something really positive.

It’s a big summer ahead in S6 with plenty of names popping up on the Owls’ transfer radar.
