Baby elephant rescued in Tamil Nadu, reunited with mother

Social media users applauded a team of Tamil Nadu forest officers from Gudalur district in the Nilgiris for rescuing a baby elephant that had accidentally fallen into a deep sandy well. IAS officer Supriya Sahu released short video clips of the rescue mission and congratulated the crew for quickly reuniting the baby elephant with its mother.

“A very encouraging report has just come in about the successful rescue and reunification of a baby elephant in Tamil Nadu. Foresters from Tamil Nadu’s Gudalur Forest Division in the Nilgiris successfully recovered a baby elephant from a 30-feet deep sand pit in an agricultural land where young elephant fell by accident,” Supriya Sahu captioned her photo.

The rescue attempt took eight hours and required the team to build a ramp so the elephant could get out of the well. Meanwhile, the mother elephant was waiting for her young calf with the rest of the herd.

“After 8 hours of hard fighting, the team managed to make a ramp for the elephant to come out of the well safely. After the rescue, the team reunited the baby elephant with her mother who was waiting patiently nearby with the herd. Big credit to DFO Gudalur, Vengatesh Prabhu, who led the operation with a team of 40 men from 3 am,” the IAS officer added.
