Wiltshire Council has announced it is investing a further £1m in flood prevention across the county.

The money will be used to improve drainage systems, focusing on fixing problems at a local level to prevent road flooding, which can lead to damaged roads and flooding of properties.

Cllr Richard Clewer, leader of Wiltshire Council, said:

“The recent winter was one of the wettest on record and climate change will continue to bring wetter conditions and more intense rainfall events in the coming years.

“We know that these increased incidents of flooding can have a real impact on our communities, which is why we are investing more money in sewerage improvements across Wiltshire.

“This additional investment, which delivers on our Business Plan commitment to well-connected communities, will deliver a significant number of permanent drainage improvements to many of our rural communities, which are often among the worst affected.

“While other councils across the country are cutting budgets, we are investing millions in the things that really make a difference to people’s everyday lives, including filling more potholes, emptying more ditches and completing more drainage improvements in Wiltshire. “

The list of areas being improved will be created with the help of the council’s Flood Taskforces and will focus on smaller schemes to enable more to be delivered across the county.
