M5 ‘drink driver’ in critical condition after two-car crash near Bristol

A driver in a critical condition in hospital following a serious crash on the M5 motorway has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving. Avon and Somerset Police were called just before 10pm last night, Wednesday May 29, to reports of a collision.

The accident happened on the northbound carriageway of the M5 between junction 20 for Clevedon and junction 19 for Portishead. Emergency services, including police and paramedics, attended the scene and closed the motorway.



Police said a 46-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving. He was taken to hospital and is in critical but stable condition.

The M5 was reopened shortly before midnight and investigating officers are now appealing for information about the crash. They are urging witnesses or anyone with relevant dash cam footage to get in touch.

Avon and Somerset Police said: “We were called shortly before 10pm last night (May 29) to reports of a two-car collision on the M5 northbound between junctions 20 (Clevedon) and 19 (Portishead ).

“The officers intervened, along with the ambulance service, and closed the road. A 46-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and taken to hospital in a critical but stable condition.

“The vehicles were recovered and the road reopened shortly after midnight. If you witnessed the collision or have any dashcam footage that could assist our investigation, please call 101 quoting reference 5224138248. “
