Major change to hand luggage rules at Bristol Airport

A major change is coming to Bristol Airport and its hand luggage rules following a security upgrade. A number of currently banned items will soon be allowed in hand luggage as Bristol Airport has paid £11.5m for state-of-the-art security scanners.

Passengers will be allowed to keep mobile phones, laptops and liquids in hand luggage. From 14 June 2024, all travelers flying from Bristol Airport will enjoy the benefits of this improved technology and streamlined processes.




The new rules mean passengers won’t have to limit toiletries and liquids to 100ml bottles and can leave laptops, tablets and mobile phones in hand luggage during security. However, due to regulatory approval beyond airport control, only liquids up to 330ml can be carried.

The new security regulations include keeping all items, including liquids up to 330ml, in carry-on bags, leaving mobile phones, electrical items and laptops in bags, emptying pockets in bags and emptying the contents of metal water bottles.

The huge security upgrade isn’t the only change Bristol Airport is implementing to improve the passenger experience. Bristol Airport is investing more than £400m in a new public transport interchange, additional multi-storey car park, new retail and catering areas and other customer improvements.

Speaking about the improved security, Graeme Gamble, Chief Operating Officer at Bristol Airport said: “We are delighted that all customers traveling from Bristol Airport will benefit from the latest technology being introduced to security. The new equipment will reduce customer stress. and inconvenience, as it will no longer be necessary to place 100 ml liquids in transparent plastic bags and take them out of hand luggage.

“The new process provides a much more customer-friendly security operation, using the latest technology and providing enhanced screening, allowing customers to keep personal items in their hand luggage.
