Tram passengers hear ‘big bang’ as ‘sparks’ seen before major services are halted

Passengers on board a Metrolink tram in Manchester heard a ‘big bang’ while ‘sparks’ were seen before major services were canceled on Wednesday (May 8).

Damage to the overhead line near Old Trafford tram station has canceled services between Altrincham and Piccadilly stations in both directions. Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) said the problem was caused by a “third party”.

Those traveling on the affected service had to leave the tram and were told by staff to walk to nearby Trafford Bar after trams on the Altrincham line were stopped.

The disruption continued throughout the afternoon, with passengers being asked to use their tickets for alternative transport services. It was later confirmed that the issue had been resolved and services had resumed. TfGM has been contacted for more information on the cause of the damage.

A passenger on board told the MEN: “We were in the tram when we seemed to hit something. There was a loud bang overhead and then what sounded like sparks cascading down the tram.

“From speaking to one of the staff on the platform, she suggested the overhead cables were the problem and directed people to walk to the Trafford Bar as it is on a separate line.”

A travel update posted by TfGM said: “Damage to the overhead line caused by a third party near Old Trafford Metrolink station means there are no services between Altrincham and Piccadilly in either direction.
