Wheelchair user Wetherby cannot board the train

A disability rights campaigner from Wetherby said he felt like an “extra burden” after he couldn’t get on the train of his choice to get home.

Doug Paulley, a wheelchair user, tried to get a Northern Rail service from Chesterfield to Leeds on Friday.

But when he tried to get on, a pole blocked access to the train ramp and staff said he couldn’t get the wheelchair onto the train.

Northern said staff would normally move the train forward slightly and investigate why this did not happen.
