Paraag Marathe says whether Red Bull’s investment will help Leeds United in the transfer market

Paraag Marathe shared what the Red Bulls’ minority investment in Leeds United will mean in the future.

The Whites made the shock announcement yesterday morning that the global energy drink brand had agreed to invest in the club, which will see them take on the shirt sponsor.

Phil Hay has already confirmed that Red Bull will not have a boardroom seat, which also means they will not have the power to change the badge, name or stadium.

After missing out on promotion to the Premier League, a difficult summer could be on the cards at Elland Road, with 49ers Enterprises admitting that key players will have to be sold.

However, Marathe has already insisted that funds will be available for Daniel Farke to spend with a view to going one better next season and returning to the Premier League.

Marathe shares what Red Bull’s investment means for Leeds in the transfer market

LeedsUnited.News spoke to Football Finance expert Adam Williams yesterday after news of Red Bull’s investment in Leeds broke.

Williams said as it was “capital investment” it would give them extra leeway in complying with the EFL’s PSR rules, which only become stricter in the second season after relegation due to a cut of parachute payments.

And now, in an interview with The Athletic, Leeds chairman Marathe has also been asked why the 49ers felt the need to bring in Red Bull.

Marathe was upbeat in his response, confirming that their investment will bring Leeds more “global revenue” and thus more money available to both buy and retain players.

He said: “They could have looked at an investment in any club in English football and they chose Leeds United. They chose to do a minority partnership – which will continue to be a minority partnership – because they recognized the global potential of Leeds and what this club could be.

“They believe in our leadership of the team and hopefully specifically in my presidency of this club.
That will not change; not today, not tomorrow. This is a minority partnership. Linking up with a global sporting organization like Red Bull will raise the profile and raise the stature of Leeds.

“We all say this is a massive club and it’s not just a story. My only aim is to make more money and pour every pound we make into (the team on) the pitch. My only goal is to make our team as competitive as possible.

“That’s why I said I hope we have a PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) issue every year because everything we’re doing is going to be maximizing our ability to be as competitive as possible.

“Partnering with Red Bull leads to more profile, global revenue, more money to buy players and keep players. That’s all I care about – keeping the team as competitive as possible.”

Why Leeds fans should be confident ahead of next season

While he will still come to terms with the disappointment of losing in Sunday’s play-off final, it would be fair to say it has been a positive few days at Elland Road.

Marathe immediately came out and spoke to the local media about Leeds’ plans for the summer and next season and was very confident that they will be able to make another promotion push.

This investment from Red Bull also shows that despite being in the Championship, the 49ers have Leeds in such a good place off the pitch, global brands want to invest in the club.

With the division, on paper, looking weaker next season, Leeds just need to get things right this transfer window and it looks like the funds will be there to do so.
