Arne Slot has already explained what he wants from his players and it is exactly what Liverpool need

Almost as soon as they said goodbye to the previous one, a new Liverpool era begins tomorrow as Arne Slot’s reign officially begins. While the Dutchman’s players are on holiday and not yet back for pre-season, there is a lot to deal with.

The team behind Slot is yet to be fully revealed and then decisions on transfers and contracts are to be made. It won’t all be down to the new head coach, of course, with the likes of Michael Edwards and Julian Ward returning to work for FSG, but the 45-year-old will need to find his bearings quickly.

There’s a clear style of play he wants to implement, which is part of why Slot was hired, and while it may take time to adjust to having new players to put into that system, the ideas are long established.

Speaking on UEFA’s official website ahead of the 2022 Conference League final, which saw his side narrowly lose to Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma, Slot outlined his tactical vision and how he wants his teams to set up . There are some very well known hallmarks.

“When we don’t have the ball, we want to win it back as quickly as possible by being aggressive and pressing to regain possession,” Slot explained. “I think we’re a tough team to beat.”

This clear main principle is similar to how Liverpool played Jurgen Klopp, of course, and it’s the sign of a strong manager that he focuses more on his own side than the opposition. Slot was respectful of Rome but wanted to play his own game.

“You have to focus on your opponent, the qualities they have and their weaknesses,” he continued. “That’s what the game plan is for, but it would be strange to play a different system for the final. We’ll play our usual system and the players you’d expect, as long as they’re all fit.”
