Michael Smith says there’s something about a Sheffield Wednesday player that can’t be coached

Michael Smith has claimed there is something about a Sheffield Wednesday gem that is truly “uncoachable”.

Michael Smith found himself among them again in the final weeks of the campaign, having started just once in the past five months.

The striker returned to the starting line-up against QPR, then started the next three matches, grabbing an important late equalizer in the 2-2 draw with Norwich City.

Smith was benched for the final three games of the campaign but looked set to force his way back into Danny Rohl’s plans ahead of another season in the Championship.

While perhaps not as prolific in the second tier, Smith’s experience and leadership can be very beneficial to the team.

At 32, Smith can become a mentor to younger players and has already highlighted the talent of Bailey Cadamarteri.

The teenager was handed a first-team opportunity by Rohl in November and has scored three goals in his first five starts for the club.

The arrival of Ike Ugbo has resulted in his place on the bench and he has only managed 16 minutes of action in their last six outings.

However, Smith still believes Cadamarteri has a huge football future and claimed he has an ability that is “uncoachable”.

Bailey Cadamarteri tipped for ‘very good career’

Speaking to The Yorkshire Post, the striker said: “I’ve seen him go into the ground and he’s not built like a 17- or 18-year-old and he’s filled in a lot and he’s got a real chance at it. also.

“He can take care of himself and has the skills and talent to be in the right place at the right time, which – as everyone says – is impossible to coach. You either got it or you didn’t.

“He’s done really well and he seems like a very quiet boy and you can see he has the experience of his family to lean on as well as those in the dressing room. I’m pretty sure he’s going to have a very good career.”

Sheffield Wednesday should send the 18-year-old out on loan

With Bailey Cadamarteri only breaking into the senior team at the end of 2023, four goals in 14 starts isn’t a bad return really.

The forward could have been given a real chance to make a positive impact if Sheffield Wednesday were relegated, but action could remain limited in the second tier.

It remains to be seen whether the Owls will attempt to sign Ugbo permanently, but in any case they are likely to sign at least one proven goalscorer to improve their chances next term.

While Cadamarteri is highly rated at Hillsborough, he could see his development stunted if he struggles for game time.

If the Owls sign a couple of strikers then it might be a good idea to send him on loan to League One where he would no doubt break the bank.

Cadamarteri could then return next summer a much more confident player and could be set to fight for a regular place in the starting line-up.
