Sheffield Wednesday record sales from 2010 to 2020

Sheffield Wednesday spent most of the 2010-2020 decade in the Championship and certainly saw their fair share of talent come through Hillsborough.

Sheffield Wednesday secured survival on the final day of the 2023/24 season after being relegated to the second tier following promotion from League One the previous campaign.

The Owls now face a summer of preparation as they aim to continue their progress in the coming term. Before we look ahead, however, it’s time to remember.

Here, we take a look at Sheffield Wednesday’s five biggest sales from 2010 to 2020 and where the players are now…

Stevie May

First on our list is centre-forward May, who spent just one season with Sheffield Wednesday before Preston North End paid £800,000 for his services in 2015.

His spell with the Lilywhites left a lot to be desired though as just 12 appearances followed in his two years at Deepdale. He managed a goal and an assist before Aberdeen managed to lure the Scotsman back to his homeland.

The one-time Scotland international spent two years with Aberdeen, scoring eight and assisting 13 in 75 appearances, before joining St Johnstone in 2019, where he remains today.

In 266 appearances, the 31-year-old scored 63 goals and registered 30 assists. Arguably the most successful period of his career, May also played in both the Europa League and Europa Conference League qualifiers and remains under contract at McDiarmid Park until 2025.

Lee Grant

Goalkeeper Lee Grant left Sheffield Wednesday in 2010 to join Burnley for a fee of £1m, with a further £500,000 in possible add-ons.

During three years with the Clarets, he made 130 appearances and was awarded the Fans’ Player of the Season award in the 2012/13 campaign. At the end of his contract, he returned to his boyhood club Derby County on a free transfer.

Grant spent the next four years with the Rams, taking his total appearances to 186 for the East Midlands outfit after his previous years at the club. However, he was left on the bench for the 2016/17 season and was loaned out to Stoke City in the Premier League before signing permanently.

The veteran stopper became Manchester United’s back-up option in 2018 and stayed at Old Trafford for four years, making two appearances before retiring. Now, aged 41, he is the first team manager for newly promoted Ipswich Town.

Jack Hunt

It follows the departure of right-back Hunt, who moved for an undisclosed fee which Transfermarkt valued at just under £1.5m – he joined Bristol City in 2018 after two-and-a-half years with the Owls.

The defender made 115 appearances in his three years with the Robins before returning to Hillsborough in 2021 as a free agent. He scored the winning penalty to send Sheffield Wednesday into the League One play-off final in 2023 and left again after promotion back to the Championship last summer.

Hunt remained in the third tier and signed for Bristol Rovers, where he scored three and assisted three in 27 appearances for the Gas.

Now 33, the former Wednesday man has a year left on his contract at the Memorial Stadium and faces another year of hotly contested League One action next campaign.

Michael Antonio

Also sold for a fee of £1.5m is Michail Antonio, who left Sheffield Wednesday to join Nottingham Forest in 2014.

The Jamaica international, who has been capped 14 times since leaving the Owls, has spent just one full season with Forest, scoring 15 goals and registering 14 assists. He was poached by West Ham United soon into his second campaign in the East Midlands.

Now approaching his ninth year with the Hammers, the striker has scored 82 goals and provided 40 assists in 308 appearances, becoming the club’s record Premier League goalscorer.

Lucas João

Topping the list as Sheffield Wednesday’s biggest sale from 2010 to 2020 and the second most expensive club departure of all time, Joao was snapped up by Reading in 2019 for £5 million.

During four years with the Royals, the forward made 119 appearances and contributed 45 goals and 16 assists, although he failed to steer his side away from relegation to League One in the 2022/23 campaign.

Angolan international Joao left Reading following their relegation to the third tier and joined Chinese outfit Shanghai Port. He scored three and set up one in ten appearances before going through again as he was crowned league champion.

In February this year, Joao joined Qatar Stars League side Umm Salal. The 30-year-old has scored four and assisted two in 11 appearances so far.
