Take a first look inside a specialty vegetarian restaurant about to open in Lindley

It’s the first restaurant of its kind in the north of England… and it’s opening in Huddersfield this week.

Huddersfield Hub can today reveal the first look inside the Gurparsad restaurant and takeaway on Lidget Street in Lindley, which opens at 11am on Tuesday (June 4).

It’s run by two Sikh friends and only serves vegetarian or vegan food, although much of it will actually look like meat.

Palwinder Singh from Birkby and close friend Harjinder Singh from Fenay Bridge set up the restaurant with their families and the restaurant’s name, Gurparsad, means God’s blessings.

The friends worship at the Sikh temple in Deighton, called Guru Tegh Bahadur Gurdwara, and their religion means they don’t eat meat, fish or eggs and don’t smoke or drink.

These dietary restrictions mean it can be difficult to find somewhere to eat, and the nearest Sikh restaurants I know of are a two-hour drive away in Birmingham.

Says Palwinder, “Our religion means we can’t eat where meat or alcohol is served, and when you think about it, there’s hardly any place that meets both requirements.

“So we thought we’d use our experience cooking in the Sikh tradition, but also open it up to all kinds of tastes.”

This means Gurparsad serves curries and other Sikh dishes alongside pizzas, kebabs and burgers – only it’s all made from a meat substitute.

Palwinder said, “People eat our ‘chicken’ dishes and then they can’t believe it’s not actually chicken, the taste is so authentic.

“We hope the restaurant means Sikhs can travel here from all over the North to dine, but we also hope everyone else will try us, which can open their minds and taste buds to vegetarian and vegan food.”

Gurparsad will also feature a wide range of Indian sweets and cakes… and none of them are made from eggs.

It took the friends three months to completely set up the restaurant they made themselves – Palwinder is a gas engineer by trade. The premises were previously the Bubble and Squeak delicatessen.

It has 30 seats on the ground floor and another 25 upstairs, but the floor has not yet been renovated.

Gurparsad is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
