Don’t tie a ribbon on your suitcase, warns the airport baggage handler

A baggage handler has shared some essential tips to ensure your luggage gets through the airport quickly and safely. Lost luggage is one of the worst travel nightmares, right up there with canceled flights and diverted planes.

Travelers are always looking for ways to simplify and speed up the airport process, and an airport worker shared his wisdom on making sure your luggage reaches its destination.

Speaking to RSVP Live, John, a baggage handler at Dublin Airport, advised holidaymakers to ditch the identification ribbons often attached to luggage, as they can cause delays getting their bags onto the plane.

He said: “The ribbons that people tie on suitcases to identify them can cause problems with the bag being scanned in the baggage hall. If the bag can’t be scanned automatically, it may end up in manual processing, which could mean your bag doesn’t make it onto the flight.”

Other luggage tips include:

  • “Remove the old stickers from the bag, it can cause confusion with the scanning process
  • Put the suitcase wheels up for less damage
  • Never pack Marzipan in your luggage. It has the same density as some explosives, so your bag will be removed and you will be called off the plane for a bag search”
