West Midlands Police have arrested two men following a fatal collision in Birmingham city center on Sunday morning (June 2).

Officers first received reports of an incident involving three cars on the A38(M) just after midnight on Sunday morning.

When officers arrived at the scene on the Aston Freeway, they found a number of people requiring immediate medical attention.

One of the victims received emergency treatment, but despite the best efforts of emergency services, one man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two people involved in the collision fled the scene before police arrived, but were eventually tracked to an area not far from the scene.

The force arrested the two men, aged 27 and 24 respectively, on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

After being arrested by the police, the two men currently remain in custody, with investigations into the collision open.

The force said it was reviewing CCTV footage as well as dashcam footage from the time of the crash, but was keen to speak to anyone who may have seen how the collision happened.

Speaking about the investigations, Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes from West Midlands Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, paid tribute to the victim who sadly lost his life.

“Unfortunately, we are dealing with a very serious collision and we are working with partner agencies to determine what caused this collision,” he said. “Our thoughts are with the family of the man who passed away.

“The road has now reopened and I would like to thank everyone for their patience with the closures while we gathered evidence and made the road safe,” Hughes added.

He also appealed for information and witnesses to come forward as soon as possible, as even the smallest detail can help officers.

Those wishing to contact the force in relation to the crash can do so by calling 101 and quoting incident reference number 46 of June 2.
