Sheffield Wednesday are making a contract decision on the midfielder ahead of the summer window

Sheffield Wednesday are looking to tie down one of their academy stars to a new contract.

Sheffield Wednesday’s contract negotiations are well under way after they avoided relegation last weekend.

The Owls have a long list of senior players out of contract and have already been reported to be in talks with Josh Windass, while they have also had “positive” talks about Danny Rohl staying at the club.

The senior squad is not their only focus though, with the board keen to ensure Wednesday’s future is also full of exciting talent.

One player they signed with the U21s last summer is Jay Buchan, who arrived on a free transfer after being released by Leeds United.

Jay Buchan is set to stay at Sheffield Wednesday for another 12 months

While the likes of Jay Glover and Luke Cook are set to move on this summer, Jay Buchan is one youngster the club would like to keep hold of.

Star journalist Joe Crann wrote on X: β€œHe’s led to believe #SWFC will exercise the one-year option on 19-year-old midfielder Jay Buchan’s contract… He’s come back strongly from injury for the U21s this season. and they scored on the last day when they beat Ipswich Town.”

Buchan enjoyed a successful season with the U21s despite his early injury, helping the team finish third in the Professional Development League North.

The Star claimed a number of Wednesday’s academy players will have the chance to impress Rohl in pre-season and Buchan could be one to catch the eye.

The 19-year-old’s versatility could help his case

The 19-year-old is a central midfielder and while there are likely to be a few arrivals in that area, Buchan could take advantage of the lack of squad depth currently available.

George Byers and Tyreeq Bakinson will return from loan spells but could leave permanently, while it is unclear whether Momo Diaby’s move will be extended.

Buchan’s versatility could also help the Owls, with the youngster playing across the backline with Leeds’ U18s last season.

After bringing in Bailey Cadamarteri last quarter, Danny Rohl isn’t afraid to give academy stars a chance and could plug some gaps with legacy talent.

Wednesday’s survival could also make playing time more difficult for the youngsters, as it is expected that if Rohl stays, he will have more funds available to strengthen the squad externally.
