Birmingham fire live as smoke billows for miles across city skyline and people told to ‘avoid the area’

Smoke could be seen for miles across Birmingham this afternoon after a fire ripped through a city street. Brummies in Birmingham city center spotted the dark gray cloud rising on the horizon at around 3.30pm today.

People visiting Edgbaston Reservoir have shared dramatic footage showing smoke on the horizon over the water. And those near the scene of the fire in Hockley shared close-up photos of the incident.




Pictures show a car “on fire” on Lower Tower Street in the Newtown area of ​​the city. People have been urged to avoid the area as seven fire crews battle the blaze.

West Midlands Fire Service warned: “We currently have a large number of firefighters dealing with a fire incident on Lower Tower Street in Newtown, Birmingham. Please avoid the area”.

Traffic monitoring website Inrix says: “Lower Tower Street both ways partially blocked, stationary traffic due to fire service activity from B4498 Summer Lane to B4114 New Town Row.”

People asked to “avoid the area” amid the fire

People have been told to ‘avoid the area’ this afternoon as a large number of fire crews work at the scene in Lower Tower Street. West Midlands Fire Service confirmed they have seven crews battling the blaze, around 35 firefighters in total.

They warned:
