Nuneaton’s new ‘bus bridge’ to ease traffic around station, returning to timetable

A ‘bus bridge’ to help ease traffic around Nuneaton station is back on the agenda. It’s been more than a decade since the plan for the “bus-only” bridge over the Anker River was first mooted.

But it is back on the agenda after Warwickshire County Council’s cabinet agreed a list of priority capital measures taken from the Warwickshire Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP).

Nuneaton’s proposed bus bridge has been shortlisted and will provide a link between Nuneaton bus station and Bond Gate. It’s no secret that congestion is caused around Harefield Road station as buses make their way in and out.

Now, after being put on hold, the plan is back on schedule and the county council has said part of the 2023-24 BSIP Plus revenue funding from the Department for Transport (DfT) will be used to pay for an initial feasibility study which is to be undertaken.

A spokesman for Shire Hall told CoventryLive that the proposed scheme would need to be progressed in a phased approach and capital funding would need to be secured to further progress the scheme.

This would pave the way for drafting and a public engagement exercise before final implementation. County cabinet members are due to meet today (May 9) to decide whether to approve the initial feasibility study.
