Every Super League 2024 red card and respective ban- Serious About Rugby League

The 2024 Super League campaign began with a red card for Hull FC man Franklin Pele in the opening game and there has been plenty more since. After Adam Keighran’s red card yesterday, all eyes are on the Match Review Panel to see if the Aussie is suspended for Wembley, so we’ve looked at each red card and their respective bans.

As mentioned, Franklin Pele saw red on his debut for Hull FC when he took a shot at Hull KR captain Elliot Minchella. Perhaps that moment of madness was a sign of things to come for Hull FC in 2024, with the Black and Whites picking up the most red cards and the third most yellow cards of any team in Super League this season.

The red card that everyone is talking about now came for Wigan Warriors though, Adam Keighran high-fiving Arron Lindop in yesterday’s clash against Warrington. The Australian now faces a nervous wait to see if he will be suspended for Wembley, a fate many fans and pundits are expecting.

Despite this expectation, some players have escaped bans after being sent off, so we’ve analyzed all 12 red cards from the 2024 Super League season to assess the likelihood of his suspension. You can check all Super League bans from the 2024 season here.

Debutant Pele was shown his first red card of the Super League season, but it wasn’t the only red card in the opening game. His swinging arm on Hull KR skipper Elliot Minchella earned him a three-match ban.

Sao Leagues (Hull FC – First Round) – 1 match

Ligi Sao was the second Hull FC player to be sent off in the first game and was initially given a three-match ban, but on appeal it was reduced to one match for his act of revenge in hitting Matt Parcell.

Liam Watts (Castleford Tigers – Round 1) – 4 games

This was a controversial one, with many arguing that Watts’ reputation preceded him as he earned a four-match ban despite being the second man in the tackle. The MRP felt that was not enough mitigation and gave him a four-match ban for making contact with the head.

Micky McIlorum (Catalans Dragons – Round One) – 4 games

Like Watts, McIlorum received a four-game ban for making contact with the head. His sentence was enhanced due to several previous disciplinary issues.

No Brown (Hull FC – Second Round) – No Ban

Brown’s red card was the most controversial of the season and even saw the RFL come out and address the issue, this incident prompted a rule change and Brown received no ban for the accidental clash of heads.

Mark Percival (St Helens – round four) – two games

Percival saw red in the fourth round for his late tackle on the passer which saw him make head contact with Jack Ormondroyd. It was St Helens’ first red card of the season.

THE QUIZ STARTS!

Liam Byrne (Wigan Warriors – Round Six) – Four games

Byrne was shown red in the Good Friday derby for his high tackle on head contact with ball carrier Mark Percival. Handed a Grade E charge, Byrne was suspended for four matches.

King Vuniyayawa (Salford Red Devils – Round Eight) – No Ban

The Salford man was the second player to be sent off and received no further punishment after being booked for his part in a spiked tackle. The match review panel held that he never raised his foot above the hoop and was not “solely responsible for the mechanics of the tackle and cannot be attributed solely to placing the opponent in a dangerous position”.

Elliot Wallis (Huddersfield Giants – Round Ten) – No ban

Like Vuniywa and Nu Brown, Elliot Wallis received no further punishment for his red card. The winger was sent off for rough contact after placing his head on Tim Lafai, but it was far from a header and as such saw no further punishment.

Tommy Makinson (St Helens – Round 11) – One game

Makingson was shown a controversial red card just 15 minutes into St Helens’ huge 60-4 win over Castleford Tigers, but was handed a one-match ban for his late tackle which caused him to make contact with the head to Tex Hoy.

Liam Horne (Castleford Tigers – Round Eleven) – One game

Horne’s dismissal was the turning point of the game as St Helens scored 46 points on the half hour when Cas went down to 12 men. The PNG star was shown red for his tackle and served a one-match ban.

Adam Keighran (Wigan Warriors – Round 13) – TBD

Keighran is the last man to be sent and will learn his fate tomorrow. Only three of the last eleven players to be shown red escaped without a ban, and those charged with a high kick and contact with the head, as Keighran will be, were each given four-match bans. Anything less would likely come down to his good record, but it certainly won’t be enough to avoid a ban for next week’s Challenge Cup final.
