The two big changes will come to Coventry this week

Two major upcoming changes come into effect in Coventry this week which will affect those who work and live in the city. Both come into effect on Monday, June 3.

The first is to ban cars at certain times of the day on Broadgate and the cathedral. It is part of a new ‘pedestrian and cycle area’.

It means that only licensed or otherwise ‘exempt’ drivers can use these roads from 10am to 6pm on weekdays and Saturdays.

Cuckoo Lane, Greyfriars Lane, Hay Lane, High Street, Pepper Lane, Priory Row, St Michaels Avenue, Trinity Churchyard and part of Bayley Lane are covered by the new area. Among the “exempt” vehicles in the new zone are buses, buggies and emergency services.

Those who own property in the area can apply for permits. It said the move would reduce traffic on the streets and improve safety, access and convenience.

Green waste tax

Another controversial move coming into effect this week is the end of free green waste collection in the city. All brown cap collections now come with a fee.

Householders in the town now have to pay an annual fee of £40 to collect their garden waste. The new paid service runs from June 3 to May 31.
