Danny Rohl is preparing for further ‘discussions’ with the Sheffield Wednesday star amid interest in the Championship

Sheffield Wednesday are set to hold further talks with one of their most ‘important’ players this week, but face competition from Championship clubs.

Sheffield Wednesday have offered seven players new contracts at the end of the season, with Liam Palmer and Barry Bannan becoming the first to extend their stays.

It is believed that some assets could be encouraged to stay at Hillsborough after Danny Rohl signed his own new contract, but interest from elsewhere could also throw a spanner in the works.

One player still in talks over his contract is Josh Windass, whose heroics on Wednesday helped them survive relegation at the end of the season.

The midfielder is open to further talks with the Owls but could still be tempted by Championship interest.

Josh Windass and Sheffield Wednesday prepare for further talks

Star journalist Alex Miller wrote on X: “Understand that talks will continue between the Owls and Josh Windass this week over the new deal. Important player for Röhl, nice to stay, but factors to sort out. It comes after reports that two Champ clubs are preparing the bid. Few others are passionate.”

Windass has attracted interest from a long list of clubs in recent months, and not just from Europe.

Wednesday must have felt confident in holding off MLS competition, but with Coventry and Hull both keen, it could be a tough task to keep hold of him.

Danny Rohl is their only hope of keeping him

Windass is already one of the Owls’ highest-paid players, pocketing around £15,000 a week.

If another Championship club can offer him even more, then Danny Rohl’s side could have a problem tying him down to new terms.

It may come down to Windass’ relationship and belief in Rohl, who has admitted he is aiming for a top-half finish next season.

Hull and Coventry will both be fighting for promotion, so it’s whether Windass is prepared to support Rohl’s plan or is hoping for a quick opportunity at Premier League football elsewhere.

There are certainly other players who could be offered league moves, with Di’Shon Bernard attracting interest this summer.

Wednesday could be in trouble if they lose some of their biggest assets, but it will show how far they’ve already come if they can keep them around.
