One Raceway is nearing its official opening

ONE Raceway has ticked off its latest achievement as tarmac has been laid on the revamped circuit formerly known as Wakefield Park.

After closing under the ownership of Benalla Auto Club, Wakefield Park was breathed into fresh life when a sale to Steve Shelley – whose portfolio also includes the nearby Pheasant Wood circuit – was completed in June last year.

Rebranded as One Raceway, the venue has undergone extensive changes that will allow it to run bi-directionally, i.e. both clockwise and anti-clockwise.

“It’s going to be something very, very special,” Steve’s brother Cameron, who manages both Shelley-owned circuits, told V8 Sleuth.

“The circuit still has the same look as the old Wakefield, but where the cars wanted to go, they were always up on the undulating strip and cutting corners.

“Steve is a racing enthusiast, won the Wakefield 300 twice here with his son. His son won another time without Steve and they both raced the Bathurst 6 Hour and so on, so very competitive and tight racing.

“He’s been out for a while and that’s why he bought Wakefield and he’d love to get back into it. He drove the circuit and now he has put the cars where he would like them to be. So I shortened some corners, widened others and it looks magnificent.

“The asphalt is coming down as we speak.”

The circuit’s relaunch is a boost not only for the Goulburn region, but for NSW motorsport in general, given the monopoly that Sydney Motorsport Park has had in recent times.

While a reduced number of days of operation (at least at high decibels) has been agreed upon, FIA licensing and Supercars testing is within One Raceway’s sights.

First, it hosts Round 6 of the 2024 Australian Superbike Championship from October 4-6.

“We’ll have an easy opening forward where we can shake all our equipment because it will be one of the most modern in the world with the 12km of fiber we have around and the most modern Mylaps. system in the world, the newest software available,” said Shelley.

“It will have 68 rooms positioned throughout the property and many new amenities that we will keep under wraps until we open.”
